The creator of HP Sauce, grocer Frederick Gibson Garton, lived for a short while on Millicent Road. He created HP Sauce in his pickling factory at the back of 47 Sandon Street in Basford in 1896.
Garton called the sauce HP because he had heard that a restaurant in the Houses of Parliament had begun serving it. Garton had to sell his patent to the Midland Vinegar Company in Birmingham for £150, due to unpaid bills to its owner Edwin Samson Moore. Since its first appearance on British dinner tables, HP Sauce has become an icon of British culture.
